Jorge Miguel
Jorge Miguel is a photographer who was born in Madrid in 1968. He considered himself an amateur photographer at just 14. in 1990 he took a course and belonged to the Photographic Lens Association of Coslada. Since then he has done a number of series and has created many interesting, artistic images.
These photographs are from one of Miguel's many series and projects called 'de cabeza' or 'heads'. The images look as if they have taken a lot of planning due to the thought and sense in colour scheme and make-up, the colour of the model match the colour of the background. The models faces are quite simple and plain, however, they have a strong, bold expression.
This is my most preferred photograph form this series. There is very low contrast in the colour of the model and the background. The model has a very serious and bold expression on his face which draws you in. Also i like the hand prints on his face and head. The colour of this compared to everything else in the photo is very bright and bold. Because it is such a deep colour of red we could assume it is meant to be prints of blood. This makes the picture immediately more interesting to look at because of the many meanings or reasons behind it.
Alyssa Monks
Alyssa Monks is an artist who does portraits using oil paints. Although she doesn't take photographs, her paintings are hyper-realistic and look very like a real image.
Most of her pieces in her projects are of people in showers. This links to my theme of identity and my idea of beinf trapped as some of her models who she has painted are pressed again the shower door or window.

Francoise Nielly - Painter
Francoise Nielly is a French artist born in Marseille and is now living in Paris. She paints using a pallet knife and was famous for painting very vibrant and colourful closeups of mostly famous people which included Barack Obama. Her technique was using different blocks and strokes of colour to display the tone of the face instead of different monochrome shades.

Light compositions
Hard Light
Hard light in a photograph creates a lot of shadow on the models face. The smaller the light source the harder light as less of the face is exposed displaying a more mysterious look. An example of genre this type of lighting could be used for is horror.
Soft Light
Soft light lights up the models whole face. This is more gentle and flattering and almost displays an airbrushed effect on the model. The larger the light source, the softer the light as everything in the photograph is exposed.
One Source Lighting
Butterfly Lighting
Butterfly lighting can be used when there is one light source which is positioned 45 degrees above the centre of the models face. This type of lighting is flattering to models face and enhances the main features on their face. Another way to measure this type of lighting is to position it where there is a shadow in the shape of a 'butterfly' underneath the models nose.
Rembrandt Lighting
Rembrandt lighting creates a dramatic and mysterious look to the models face, this type of lighting can also make their face appear more narrow. This type of lighting can be shot when the light source is 45 degrees above the model and 35 degrees to the side. Another way of recognising this type of light is when there is a triangle on the cheek on the opposite side of the light source.
Split Lighting
Split lighting is caught when the light source is shining on the side of the models face and the camera is in front. Only half of the models face will be lit while the side opposite the source would be dark and under shadow, this can create a very sinister look.
Rim Lighting
Rim lighting is when only the rim/outline of the models face is lit. This can be achieved when the photograph is being taken on the opposite side of the light source.
Two Source Lighting
River Cop Lighting
River cop lighting is very unflattering to the models face. It can be achieved by having two light sources both at each end of the face and slightly behind. It creates an effect which makes the models face appear more narrow and almost makes the model looked cross eyed.
Spray Lighting
Spray lighting is when the background is lit up. In this particular image i used butterfly lighting in front of the model and had a light source low behind the model and angled it upwards.
Clam Shell Lighting
Clam shell lighting lights up the whole model. it works when there are two light sources , one above the model and once just under their chin, both angle towards their face. This lighting is quite f;attiring to the models face and creates a soft atmosphere.

Alyssa Monks Inspired Photo shoot.
I think that from the photographs I had taken for my photo shoot experimenting Alyssa Monks, this is was one that appeared as one of the best. I think, unlike the other images, the lack of light displayed the water better and therefore made the purpose of taking this photo more successful. Alyssa Monks oil paintings was clearly people in showers. Having less light made the water on the glass more visible. You could also clearly see her face pressed against the glass which linked to the theme of identity and my idea of being trapped. i think the hand in these images made the idea more noticeable as it looked as if she was trying to push herself out or to escape.
Francois Nielly - Face Paint Inspired Photo Shoot.
Photoshop
After researching and experimenting using the work of Francois Nielly I used photoshop to edit my photographs while inspired by the dark background and bold faces of Luca Pierro. First I had to select the face and create a layer so I could edit the face and the background separately, once selecting the background I adjusted the brightness and contrast to darken the background, I had to do this a number of times to get it to the darkest black. Once I did this I used the sponge tool on the face I saturated the paint on the face to enhance the colour and make it stand out more and desaturated the skin that was left not painted. I sharpened features like her eyes and mouth to make them look bolder and blurred the hair and neck so it would lose focus.

Final Idea Photo shoots
After experimenting with the artists, I decided to develop to a final idea using all three of the artists, bringing the bold, vibrant colours from Pierro and Nielly and putting it behind a glass door like Monks.
